Samarkand Human Rights Web-Forum on Youth 2020: Global Solidarity, Sustainable Development and Human Rights



The Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the National Human Rights Center in partnership with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), United Nations office in Uzbekistan, OSCE Project Coordinator in Uzbekistan, F. Ebert Foundation will hold the Samarkand Human Rights Web-Forum on “YOUTH 2020: GLOBAL SOLIDARITY, SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND HUMAN RIGHTS” on 12-13 August 2020.

The Samarkand Forum will be attended by more 200 representatives and experts from the UN and its Agencies (UNESCO, ILO, IOM, UNICEF, UNFPA, UNDP, OHCHR), IPU, OSCE, OIC, CIS, Council of Europe, African Union. A large number of representatives from Youth parliaments, National Human Rights Institutions, Youth organizations, relevant state bodies and academia will also participate.

The main goal of the Forum is to discuss improvements on existing international and regional instruments and mechanisms for the protection and promotion of youth rights, as well as the role of youth in the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the UN World Program on Human Rights Education.

The participants will discuss the draft Convention on the Rights of Youth, which is a new document reflecting the specific rights of youth that are necessary for recognition in the modern world. The development of the Convention was proposed by the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev at the 72nd UN General Assembly in September 2017.

The Forum is a logical continuation of the Asian Forum on Human Rights, which was held in Samarkand on November 22-23, 2018. As the outcome of the Asian Human Rights Forum the Samarkand Human Rights Declaration was adopted, then approved by the UN General Assembly on February 6, 2019, as a document of the 73rd session.
