The President of Uzbekistan H.E. Shavkat Mirziyoyev has visited the Victory Park in Tashkent, created in honor of the 75th Anniversary of the Victory over Fascism, and laid flowers at the “Ode to Fortitude” memorial.

According to the President, the monument is to be a vivid reminder, especially for young people, about the values inherent in the Uzbek people as well as become a place of spiritual and moral education for compatriots.

May 9th is commemorated in Uzbekistan as a Remembrance & Honors Day. The leadership of Uzbekistan pays tribute to the veterans of the Second World War, sacredly honors the memory of those who died in this war.

About 3 thousand veterans and 70 thousand rear workers currently live in the republic. Participants and invalids of the war received a monetary reward from the Government due to celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Victory over fascism.

Key facts of Uzbekistan’s contribution to the Victory in WWII

  • Of 6.5 mln. population of the republic at that time, about 1.95 mln. people were mobilized (every third). Over 538 thousand were killed in battles, more than 158 thousand were missing.
  • Over 200 thousand of soldiers and officers were awarded military orders and medals. Among them 301 got Hero of the Soviet Union title, and 70 became holders of the Order of Glory of all three degrees.
  • 1.5 million people were evacuated to Uzbekistan, including over 250 thousand children who were adopted by Uzbek families. A vivid example is the family of the Tashkent blacksmith Shoahmed Shomakhmudov, who adopted 14 children.
  • 151 plants were relocated from front-line territories to Uzbekistan. With its over 200 large industrial plants the country had turned into a support base producing large number of military equipment, ammunition, food, clothing, medicines and other products.
